Today is the birthday of J.R.R. Tolkien. I won’t waste a lot of words here – I’ll simply point you to his writing and mention that Tolkien’s imagination is the reason why I am the person I am today. So do yourself a favour, and go pick up ‘The Children of Hurin’, or ‘The Hobbit’. Take some time to meander through the story. Treat it like a good brandy, or cognac. The rewards are worth it.
I very recently reread “Aldarion and Erendis.” Such a different tale from pretty much everything else in the mythology, but such an interesting and well-written one.

I’ll have to re-read that one, as I’d more or less forgotten about it. Unfinished Tales is probably my favourite posthumous Tolkien material.

Have you read History of Middle-earth? There are a few philosophical and other things in it that sound really interesting and I want to read, but it’s so intimidating! I own a few volumes, but never gotten very far in any.

I have indeed read them – the later volumes (History of the Lord of the Rings) are difficult to get through because it’s just page after page after page of drafts, unfinished ideas, etc. The earlier ones, however, are brilliant, such as the Book of Lost Tales 1 and 2, which is probably some of my favourite Tolkien material. It gets repetitive, too, since so much of the HOME volumes are the same stories with slight variations. Pure delight to read, even in spite of the that.
